WHAT IS THE MSI CLASSIC LEAGUE?

The MSI Classic Program offers youth soccer players a more competitive level of in-house play for teams in the U-10 through U-19 age groups. Unlike MSI Recreational youth soccer, Classic youth soccer is a "Select" program in which players must try out for and be selected for teams by the individual coaches. MSI is not involved in this tryout process.

MSI Classic youth soccer players demonstrate a greater commitment, interest and skill in learning and playing the game at a higher level. For many, the Classic Program is just the beginning of a youth's competitive soccer experience that may be fully realized at varying levels throughout their association with the game. To help Classic players reach a higher level, MSI requires that all Classic coaches hold a NSCAA Regional Diploma, a USSF E-License or higher.

Teams are grouped by USYS age group classifications, not by grades, as listed below: (this is for the Fall 2011 - Spring 2012 season).

Age Group* Format Max Roster Size Game Length
U-10 (8/1/01-7/31/03)** 7 v 7 13 players two 30-minute halves
U-11 (8/1/00-7/31/01) 8 v 8 14 players two 30-minute halves
U-12 (8/1/99-7/31/00) 8 v 8 14 players two 30-minute halves
U-13 (8/1/98-7/31/99) 11v11 18 players two 35-minute halves
U-14 (8/1/97-7/31/98) 11v11 18 players two 35-minute halves
U-15 (8/1/96-7/31/97) 11v11 21 players two 40-minute halves
U-16 (8/1/95-7/31/96) 11v11 21 players two 40-minute halves
U-17 (8/1/94-7/31/95) 11v11 21 players two 40-minute halves
U-18 (8/1/93-7/31/94) 11v11 21 players two 40-minute halves
U-19 (8/1/92-7/31/93) 11v11 21 players two 40-minute halves
**The U10 grouping includes U9 players

HOW DO YOU JOIN A U-10, U-11, or U-12 CLASSIC TEAM?

Players may join Classic U-10, U-11, and U-12 teams in one of three ways:

1)
successfully completing a Classic Skills Evaluation, attending individual Classic team tryouts, and being selected by a Classic coach

2) being previously carded during the previous seasonal year to a team in MSI (and having passed the Skill Evaluation) or in OBSL, WAGS or NCSL, attending individual Classic team tryouts, and being selected by a Classic coach

3) attending individual Classic team tryouts and being selected by a Classic coach to fill one of that team’s three wild card roster slots. (Each U-10, U-11, and U-12 Classic team has three wild cards it can use for players who did not register for a Classic Skills Evaluation or who did not successfully complete a Classic Skills Evaluation.)

WHAT IS THE CLASSIC SKILLS EVALUATION?

MSI conducts one hour Skills Evaluation sessions to evaluate players wishing to play soccer on U-10, U-11, and U-12 Classic teams. The evaluation for field players consists of the opportunity to play in several different 4 v 4 games in a 25 x 35 yard area, with and against a variety of teammates and opponents, while being evaluated by a variety of MSC and MSI Classic coaches. The evaluation for goalkeepers includes an opportunity to demonstrate their skills (catching, diving, etc.) to an experienced goalkeeper coach and then play in the 4 v 4 games as a goalkeeper in a regular sized goal.

For evaluation criteria for field players, click here.

Players are only evaluated for ONE position--either as a field player or as a goalie. After they have passed the evaluation, they may tryout for teams and may tryout for any position on a team. They are not required to only tryout in the position they were evaluated in.  During the registration, you will be asked to let us know whether the player is being evaluated as a goalie or field player for planning purposes, but the player may change the position when they arrive for the evaluation if they would like to.

72 working hours after an evaluation is complete, the results are tabulated and posted on this web page. Those players that successfully complete the Classic Skills Evaluation will have their number that was given to them at registration posted as being entered into our "Competitive Players Pool".

A player who successfully completes the Skills Evaluation is NOT guaranteed a roster spot on a Classic team. After successfully completing the Skills Evaluation, a player should contact Classic teams he/she is interested in playing for and request a tryout. Teams looking for new players can be found on the MSI website on our tryout pages

(These tryouts will not be posted until after all the Classic Skill Evaluations are completed in May but in the Winter you will find tryout notices posted on the Classic website anytime from the end of the Fall season.) You would go to the front page of www.msiclassic.org, navigate to Team Websites and the correct websites for the age group and gender. MSI encourages families to interview Classic coaches of teams to determine the best fit for your child. Each Classic team is autonomous and managed individually. Players and their families need to carefully consider the numerous factors involved with choosing a team, including the personality and qualifications of the coach; location, date, and time of practices; cost (which is different for each team), etc. If a player has ALREADY registered for the MSI recreation program and then is selected to play for a Classic team, the player must withdraw from the Recreation program within the PUBLISHED DEADLINES in order to eligible to play and to receive any applicable refunds. The process for contacting Classic teams is explained at the Skill Evaluation sessions.

Players who do not successfully complete the Classic Skill Evaluation will have their numbers that were given to them at registration posted as remaining in our "Recreational Players Pool". BECAUSE OF THE VAST NUMBERS OF COACHES AND PLAYERS INVOLVED, MSI IS NOT ABLE TO DISCLOSE OR RELEASE ANY INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS SCORES OR INFORMATION FROM THE SKILL EVALUATIONS. A player who does not successfully complete the Classic Skills Evaluation may still try out for one or more Classic teams as a “wild card” player. Each U-10, U-11, and U-12 team may have up to three wild cards on their team at a time. Classic coaches use their wild cards to roster players who did not register to take the Classic Skills Evaluation or who did not successfully complete the Classic Skills Evaluation. So, while 75-80% of the players playing Classic Soccer for U-10, U-11, and U-12 teams have successfully completed the Classic Skills Evaluation, approximately 15-20% of the roster slots for teams in the latter age groups may be filled by wild card players each seasonal year. Players are required to notify coaches when requesting a tryout as a wild card player that they have not successfully completed the Skills Evaluation.

WHEN ARE CLASSIC SKILL EVALUATIONS HELD?

MSI’s Classic Skills Evaluations are held each Spring for the following Fall season, and a limited number of Classic Skills Evaluations are offered each Winter for players hoping to join a Classic soccer team the following Spring. Players attending the Winter Skills Evaluation should be aware of the VERY LIMITED spaces available on Classic teams for the Spring season and are advised to attend ONLY when they know they have a particular team that they will be trying out for...or if they are a current wild card player on a Classic team.

The final 2011-12 Winter Classic Skill Evaluations will be held on Saturday, January 7th. Players must arrive 30 minutes prior to the session for which they have pre-registered for in order to check in.

The dates are as follows:

May  - Tuesdays and Saturdays - Times and Location TBD

Boys ....pm (arrive at             )
Girls ....pm  (arrive at            )

Available Sessions:
Online Registration for the next Classic Skills Evaluations will open mid April.

HOW DOES A PLAYER PRE-REGISTER?

We offer at least five Skill Evaluation sessions in May each year in preparation for teams forming for the following "seasonal year" which encompasses the Fall and Spring seasons. We also hold a very limited session in the wintertime after the Fall season. No walk up registrations are accepted. Please register with the online registration link above using your Visa or MasterCard when the registration becomes available. Macintosh computers are not compatible with this registration system.

You only need to attend ONE evaluation, and you may not attend a second evaluation if you do not successfully complete the evaluation until 12 months have passed.  Players are only evaluated in one position at an evaluation. Once you pass the evaluation you may tryout for a team in any position.

Players must pre-register online and pay a $15 fee by Visa or MasterCard. Sessions often fill early, so register early. We also encourage you to sign up for the earliest appropriate session in May that you can attend. We do not accept walk up registrations. Pre-registered players must check in at least 30 minutes prior to their session.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT MSI'S SKILL EVALUATIONS?

When taking the skills evaluation, players must wear proper soccer attire including shin guards with socks that cover the shin guards, soccer shoes, shorts and a T-shirt. Players should also bring a warm-up during the Fall and Winter sessions, as the sessions will be held outdoors unless indicated otherwise. Depending on the weather conditions, the evaluators may permit players to wear the warm-up while playing during the Skills Evaluation. Goalkeepers are permitted to wear proper attire for goalkeepers including goalie gloves, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Players must bring at least 16 ounces of cold water. PLAYERS MUST BRING A BALL! You will receive a registration confirmation and you should bring that to the evaluation, and you should keep your players assigned number to check the players status after the evaluation.

Players who have successfully completed the Classic Skills Evaluation in the past DO NOT have to complete it again to be eligible to try out for a U-10, U-11, or U-12 Classic teams. Those players who were not successful in their first evaluation may repeat the skills evaluation each year after a full year (May to May for example) has passed until successfully completed.

Players who currently play for select, carded, travel teams in OBSL, WAGS or NCSL are pre-qualified and do not have to participate in the Classic Skills Evaluation Process. Please refer to tryout notices for contact information regarding individual team tryouts.

Players must register to be evaluated in their age group as defined in the registration link above even if they plan to play for an older team.
(U9 players are not evaluated during Winter evaluations due to the lack of opportunities on teams and lack of space in evaluations.)

Boys must be evaluated with other boys. Girls must be evaluated with other girls even if they plan to play on a boy’s team. Players will be evaluated with their proper age group, even if they intend to play "up" on an older team.

Players may be evaluated as a field player or as a goalkeeper only once per year. However, a player who does not successfully complete the evaluation for one position may register to be evaluated for the other position within the same year, but a player may only be evaluated for one position during a specific Classic Skills Evaluation session.

A player who successfully completes the evaluation as either a field player or a goalkeeper is permitted to play as a field player and/or as a goalkeeper for the Classic team he is selected to play for.

Just prior to the Skill Evaluation session, a short informational meeting will be held with the players and parents, so please make sure you arrive 30 minutes prior to your session so that you may be involved in this and help understand the process.

If, after reviewing all the information here and in the Classic Section of the MSI web site, you still have questions, please direct your inquiries to skills@msisoccer.org.
