JOINING A CLASSIC TEAM
U-10, U-11, or U-12 Teams
Players may join Classic U-10, U-11, and U-12 teams in one of three ways (see Fall 2011/Spring 2012 age group definitions below):
successfully completing an MSI Classic Skills Evaluation, attending individual Classic team tryouts, and being selected by a Classic coach
being previously carded during the previous seasonal year to a team in ANOTHER Select league, attending individual Classic team tryouts, and being selected by a Classic coach; or
attending individual Classic team tryouts and being selected by a Classic coach to fill one of that team’s three wild card roster slots. (Each U-10, U-11, and U-12 Classic team has three wild cards it can use for players who did not register for a Classic Skills Evaluation or who did not successfully complete a Classic Skills Evaluation.)
U-13 and Older Teams
Players joining U-13 and older teams do not need to successfully complete a Classic Skills Evaluation and may join one of these teams by attending individual Classic team tryouts and being selected by a Classic coach.
Many teams will begin to post these tryout notices near the end of May and throughout June and July for the Fall 2011 season, so you should check the website often for updates.
Age Group Classifications for Fall 2011-Spring 2012
United States Youth Soccer defines the age groups listed above.
In order to provide an appropriate level of competition for all teams, MSI reserves the right to combine age groups.
U-19 players who participate in the Classic League must be enrolled in high school.
A Classic team must play in the age group of its oldest player or one age group older. An individual player must play for a team in his/her age group or one age group older. Parents and/or prospective coaches of a player wishing to “play up” two or more age groups must contact MSI and request an exception to the rule. (For example, a U-9 player may play on a U-11 Classic team if the player is accepted into the Classic team through one of the three ways described above and an MSI Classic Program Manager approves.) Exceptions for players wishing to "play up" two or more age groups may be granted, but MSI encourages players to play up no more than one age group. There is a form for this exemption on the MSI website under Programs/Classic/US Club Player Registration.
A girl may play on a boys team in her age group or one age group older. A boy may not play on a girls team.
A player may play on one and only one Classic team at a time, subject to the rules of US Club Soccer, unless the Classic teams are in different age groups.
A player on a Classic team may not play on an MSI Recreational team.
Subject to the rules of US Club Soccer, the MSI Classic League and the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association, a player rostered to a U-13 or older Classic team may also be rostered to a second Maryland carded team in another select league, unless it is a US Club Soccer team, and has received permission to do so. However, U-13 and older Classic teams may have no more than three players rostered to a second carded team. (This process is also known as “double carding” or “multiple rostering” or “secondary carding.”)
A player rostered to a U-12 or younger Classic team may not be rostered to any other carded or select team at the same time.
